First Snow

Ottawa woke to the first snow of the winter.

And I kind of went overboard

 capturing it

 on plants and boulders.

I am linking this post with NF Blo-Ma.

There are milkweed seed pods,
and milkweed fluff all over the place.

Velvetleaf

I was curious about the blossoms of the velvetleaf,
so I brought a stem home.
 They only last the day,
then develop into seed pods,
and drop the seeds, ready for spring.

Birdsfoot Trefoil

The birdsfoot trefoil is still blooming,
although a lot of it is going to seed as well.
The pods burst open and fling the seeds away.

This meme is all about flowers and macros,
so today, I am sharing peony seed pods, and the one lone seed that I could find.
to see more wonders.

Fireweed

I don't remember noticing this plant before,
but there was a lot of it along the bike path.
It is fireweed, and is happily growing even though there has not been a fire.
Looking at the curly cross shape of the stigma makes me realize it is related to the hairy willow herb.
Those tubular things are the seed pods, and they burst sort of like a banana!

What is it about poppy seed pods that is so appealing?

Milkweed

The afternoon sun lights the inside of the empty seed pods.

Seed Pods

My mother's garden is separated from a soccer field by a large berm, so that is snow in the background, not sky.
The ice on the seed pods takes such varied shapes.

Milkweed with Frost

You can see the sun rising,
just looking at the milkweed pods.

Milkweed

I have been enjoying the milkweed
and want to share a selection of what I have captured.
 For the most part,
 the seedpods are empty now,
and the seeds have blown away.
Some have been caught in other plants,
and others are lying in the fields, gathering frost.
