A Woodpecker?

I had to check out this tree, see what caused all the wood chips.

 I have no idea what created these holes,

 but it must have taken a lot of time.

Moss

Someday, I will find out what these things are called...

 

Tiny Fern

I found this tiny fern growing beside some rocks.

I have never seen such a small fern, but you can see the fiddleheads.

 It is barely two inches tall, shorter than this dogtooth leaf.

Another plant I will have to look for on my next visit...

Bloodroots

I made my first trip of the spring to the Beaver Pond Trail,

 where I found wildflowers in bloom,

some varieties of which I had never seen before.

 These are bloodroots, a flower I remember from childhood.

 If you pick the blossoms, their sap stains your hands an orangey red.

 And yes, I have selected the best captures.

 Fifty made it into the first round of editing.

I don't know what it was about the lighting,

 but you can really see the ultraviolet

 in these blossoms.

The Flower Show had a lot of white pansies.

I don't remember what sort of a tree this is,

 and I will have to get back out there and mark it,

or I will forever wonder

 what these interesting leaves are.

They Used To Be Pussywillows

In the past couple of years,

 I have become fascinated

 with the second stage of the pussywillow.

As they cease to be silky catkins,

 they become compound flowers,

 and each hair becomes

a tiny blossom.

 

Watery Wednesday

We are back to normal temperatures for the first week of April.

 That means there is often frost in the mornings,

 which melts to form water droplets on the clover leaves.

Coltsfoot Blossoms

The coltsfoot is starting to bloom, 

 but the mornings are still cold.

 I'll have to see about getting there in an afternoon.
