Tiny Fern

I found this tiny fern growing beside some rocks.
I have never seen such a small fern, but you can see the fiddleheads.
It is barely two inches tall, shorter than this dogtooth leaf.
Another plant I will have to look for on my next visit...

More Snow and Ice

I am amazed that the ferns
are still green under the snow,
while the seed heads are encased in ice.

Winter Ferns

The ferns spent the summer
 preparing for next year,
and the frost decorated the seeds.

Fiddleheads and Ferns

I think these are ostrich ferns -

the ones that are gathered wild as fiddleheads

and served as a seasonable vegetable, with lots of butter.

If they are left to grow,

they uncurl into graceful ferns,

and blanket the woods.

Trees In The Air

Another example of a tree that started growing on top of a stump, only to have the stump rot out from under it.

I find it odd to be able to see amongst the roots of the tree.

Beside the Salmon River

One of the rest stops on our vacation last week

was amidst the mosquitoes of the Salmon River.
