Broken Mirror

A bit of a dilemma today.

I edited these photos from last year,

and I really cannot decide how to pare the number down any further.

It's a bit of broken mirror, and some grass and the bits from a May birch tree.

Birch Catkins

After an afternoon and evening of freezing rain,

 the sun shines on the birch catkins,

 turning the ice to jewels.

I was experimenting with the birch flowers the other morning, and I think this is the best shot.

Look Up

If you lean against a tree trunk, and look up, this is what you can see.

Beavers Have Been At Work

We have been wandering through some new territory,

and have found an area where the beavers have been felling trees.

I have never noticed before how clearly you can see the tooth marks in the trees.

This birch stump is still alive, trying to send its sap to its branches. I have read that birch sap can be gathered and turned into syrup, the same way that maple sap is.

Skywatch Friday

The sun wasn't far enough above the horizon to cast its light on all the trees yet, and I love the contrast.

Birch Catkins

The birch branches in the vase with the forsythia and lilacs are finally starting to show signs of growth.

The catkins are easily twice as long as they were a month ago.

Trees In The Air

Another example of a tree that started growing on top of a stump, only to have the stump rot out from under it.

I find it odd to be able to see amongst the roots of the tree.

Watery Wednesday

At the dog park, there are a couple of places where I can see across this small pond

to the birch tree on the other side. Often, there are ducks, geese, and herons in the water.

But none today.

Look Up, Look 'Way Up

The leaves are so colourful against the blue of the sky.

Even moreso as some of the leaves fall,

so you can see the individual leaves on the trees.

And I really like staring straight up! It is safest to lean on a nice trunk when you do this, though!

Many kinds of trees, and many colours of leaves.

Sometimes, no leaves at all.

Sometimes, the skies have been cloudy,

and sometimes they have been blue.
