Wednesday evening, I noticed part of a rainbow near the sun. We hadn't had any rain in a couple of days, so I took a few shots, over the course of five minutes.

I have heard these referred to as "sundogs" as well - but we always called them "sunbows". They are refractions (as opposed to 'reflections' like regular rainbows) of sunlight on tiny ice crystals and are fairly rare! How fortunate it stuck around long enough for you to photograph it - it's gorgeous!
Wonderful shots, Judy, but like some people already said: it's not a rainbow but a sundog. You can see this sometimes left or right of the sun, before the weather gets worse and rainy.
These are sundogs and are usually harbengers of bad weather within a day or two. They are caused by the refraction of light through high altitude ice crystals.
